Chat
with Sheryl Crow, April 16th, 2002
--
Digital Dish Diva says:
Welcome to MSN Live! This afternoon we are pleased to welcome
Sheryl Crow to MSN Live for the first time. Sheryl's latest
CD is "C'mon C'mon."
Digital Dish Diva says:
Hi Sheryl, welcome to MSN Live! Thanks for being here today.
Sheryl Crow says:
Hey everybody! I'm so happy that everyone's tuning in! It's
such a great day. We finally have the record out.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Your schedule must be pretty crazy today as your CD is released.
What's a day today like for you?
Sheryl Crow says:
For me, it's a great personal relief because it's finally
finished and now people get to hear it. It's really exciting!
mindypr in Onstage1 asks:
Maybe I just don't get it, but what do the different numbers
that are on your CDs mean? (31454 0959 2)
Sheryl Crow says:
It probably means track listing. On three of the tracks
I have outside help, so it probably refers to the track
listing.
alexsis021 in Onstage1 asks:
What is it like to collaborate with artists like Stevie
Nicks?
Sheryl Crow says:
It's different with each artist. With Stevie, I know her
so well, it's like working with a family member. We have
a great time together and she's very receptive to new ideas.
We had more fun in the studio than outside the studio. (laughs)
StoicMuse in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, why was it important to do a tribute to 70's summer
rock when you seem to have established such a niche in the
music industry?
Sheryl Crow says:
I wouldn't call this album a tribute to 70's rock by any
stretch of the imagination. There are melody driven rock
songs that aren't the standard, and that might revisit the
70's but it wasn't intentional.
TDHSneth27 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, what do you think of Prince's cover of "Everyday
is a Winding Road"? Will you be working with him more?
Sheryl Crow says:
I like his cover. I thought it was funny that he changed
some lyrics to make it a gentler version. I'm still pals
with him. I'm a big fan.
imasweet2th in Onstage1 asks:
How much emphasis do you place on the fans opinions? i.e.
your clothes, hair, the songs they like or dislike etc.
Sheryl Crow says:
To be honest I don't read magazines or reviews just because
I think it feeds into something that isn't healthy for me.
It's better for me to keep my own vision and hopefully people
will respect that.
iluvlilian0 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, you did collaboration with Kid Rock but why it wasn't
included in your new album, "C'mon C'mon"?
Sheryl Crow says:
The collaboration I did with him actually went up on his
record.
lindainitaly in Onstage1 asks:
I love "Weather Channel." It is a deep, intense
mix of emotional music and poignant lyrics. You pictured
the whole thing so well. How emotional do you get writing
"delicate" songs like this? How do you do it?
Sheryl Crow says:
That particular song was inspired by a low period I went
through. While you're writing, you're not editing yourself.
You're trying to tell a truth. So those lyrics aren't calculated.
Those songs are always the best songs to me.
spankyspeed in Onstage1 asks:
Did you learn anything in high school which proved essential
to the success of your performance career?
Sheryl Crow says:
Thank you. Funny you should ask that. I learned how to learn
which is the most valuable thing I learned in high school
and college. And I learned how to twirl the baton. (laughs)
Digital Dish Diva says:
Has that skill ever come in handy since?
Sheryl Crow says:
Absolutely! I have twirled after a Wallflowers show in nothing
but a bikini and body paint. (laughs)
Digital Dish Diva says:
I hope that is on a DVD somewhere. (laughs)
Sheryl Crow says:
For posterity. (laughs)
CarrieLeigh_1 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, your music has had (and still has) such an impact
on my life. Is it hard to put such personally emotional
thoughts in such a public medium?
Sheryl Crow says:
When I'm writing a song, it doesn't occur to me that people
are going to hear it. I do it for selfish reasons. When
a day like today comes and you know someone else is going
to hear it, I get a little nervous. Hopefully the songs
will resonate with them. That's what music has always been
to me.
bonded35 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, your songwriting is why I buy your albums. I was
curious to know how many songs are there that didn't make
the new album? P.S. You have the most striking eyes. Quite
beautiful. Thanks! S.T.
Sheryl Crow says:
I think I recorded 21 songs and there are 13 on the U.S.
version and 15 on the album outside the U.S. So I can say
6 definitely didn't make it.
MsCreation1 in Onstage1 asks:
I just got "C'mon C'mon" and I want to tell you
that it is amazing. Thanks for another great record. After
the difficulties you had naming it why did you eventually
choose C'mon C'mon? Was it just the song or some other meaning?
Thanks.
Sheryl Crow says:
I named it that because I felt like the long winter we went
through, metaphorically speaking was a strong indication
about having your time i.e. in the summer.
raven1053 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl do you ever miss teaching and having a basic life
or is that a silly question?
Sheryl Crow says:
I have a pretty basic life with the exception of all the
traveling I do. I am able to keep some anonymity. I have
dreams about being back in the classroom though. (laughs)
I don't know what that means.
Digital Dish Diva says:
You could always teach a Master Class.
Sheryl Crow says:
I taught a short class at Dartmouth. It was fun to be back
with college kids. They were much smarter than I was. (laughs)
Manolis_Varnasactor1 in Onstage1 asks:
Do you ever get stage fright?
Sheryl Crow says:
I do get stage fright every now and again. If it's live
TV or live, I get nervous.
MusicianForLife in Onstage1 asks:
I heard you were inspired a bit by the Grateful Dead. Are
you a Dead Head?
Sheryl Crow says:
I am totally not a Dead Head, I'm ashamed to say.
flash_guru5 in Onstage1 asks:
I heard you used to be a backup singer for the Eagles. Is
that true?
Sheryl Crow says:
No. I backed up Michael Jackson and Don Henley but not the
Eagles.
Juddy_Lo in Onstage1 asks:
Do you have any time for yourself now you're so busy?
Sheryl Crow says:
Not very much right now, but I'm scheduling a vacation,
which is something I've never done before. So hopefully
I'll have some free time.
strongenough53 in Onstage1 asks:
Will your concert in Central Park be released on DVD soon?
Has anyone ever mentioned you switched the 2nd and 3rd verses
on "White Room"? Just curious.
Sheryl Crow says:
No one's every mentioned that and it's entirely possible.
Having said that, I'm going to go and check it out.
HskrShelby1 in Onstage1 asks:
Hi Sheryl! This CD makes me want to take a road trip. What
kind of car do you drive?
Sheryl Crow says:
I have a little BMW X-5. It's the SUV. It's the first new
car in my whole life.
wrightlulu in Onstage1 asks:
What is the "driving force" that keeps you going?
Sheryl Crow says:
I think the thing that keeps me going and interested in
what I'm doing is that I feel I'm getting better at it and
I just love my job. I have the best job in the world.
mbscoop in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, "C'mon C'mon" is awesome! I'm listening
to it now. Can't wait for the tour! What is your favorite
song to perform live?
Sheryl Crow says:
I really enjoy playing "C'mon, C'mon" the song.
It has a great lilt.
desodawg in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl what is your favorite instrument to play?
Sheryl Crow says:
I like to play bass while I'm performing. When I'm not performing
I like to play the piano.
Shwiata in Onstage1 asks:
How was it like performing live with all of those great
artists, sharing the stage for live in NYC?
Sheryl Crow says:
It is INSANE! I can't even explain how much fun that concert
was!
imasweet2th in Onstage1 asks:
Can you solve a disagreement? On "Soak up the Sun"
when you say "I got my 45 on. . ." Do you mean
sunscreen or a 45 record?
Sheryl Crow says:
Honey, I am all about that sunscreen.
zeus_763 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, what's your favorite out of all the songs you have
written?
Sheryl Crow says:
"My Favorite Mistake," "Riverwide,"
and "Home."
Suede418 in Onstage1 asks:
How do your and your incredible band decide what instrument
you will play live? Are you going to play accordion on this
tour? I see Mike plays it on "C'mon C'mon" live.
Sheryl Crow says:
We try to have a good mix of the old stuff and new stuff.
We try to keep the show upbeat. I'll definitely be playing
the accordion because no rock show is complete without it.
(laughs)
LisaTski in Onstage1 asks:
When are you going to announce your tour? I know I can use
a night out of singing and dancing.
Sheryl Crow says:
You got to get out more. (laughs) I think the dates are
already out on the internet.
mbscoop in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, anymore plans to try your hand at acting? I loved
you in "The Minus Man"! You seem like a natural.
Sheryl Crow says:
I think I'm a better musician than actor. I don't like being
in front of the camera enough to not want to act.
RockinMom62 in Onstage1 asks:
Which do you find more technically difficult? Computers
or Composing?
Sheryl Crow says:
I'm so not computer savvy so I would have to say computers
are much more difficult to me.
spankyspeed in Onstage1 asks:
What was the first LP you can remember falling in love with?
Sheryl Crow says:
The first LP I got was with my own money was "ABC"
by the Jackson Five.
AsleepDock in Onstage1 asks:
Is being on the road and touring one huge temptation to
party?
Sheryl Crow says:
No, it's all work, no fun, no laughing, no great memories,
just boring old work. Ha ha!
on_PAROLE1 in Onstage1 asks:
When did you feel that you had your calling in life and
did it come with adversity?
Sheryl Crow says:
I always knew I wanted to be in music. My parents were musicians,
and I always admired musicians. Anything that takes that
long to develop and is full of adversity and rejection is
worth it to me.
goth_chik_wales in Onstage1 asks:
What was your most memorable concert?
Sheryl Crow says:
My most memorable concert for me was when I was 13 and I
went to see Peter Frampton. I remember thinking that was
the most rad job.
Becky2SG in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, what's been the proudest moment of your career so
far? How are you?
Sheryl Crow says:
Becky, thank you, I'm doing quite well. My proudest moment
was singing with Pavarotti in Italy and my parents were
in the front row. I think my mom finally thought I made
it. All those piano lessons paid off. (laughs)
Suede418 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, how is your beautiful dog "Scout". Does
he still travel with you? Hope he is doing good!
Sheryl Crow says:
He's fine. I got him a new brother and sister from the pound.
He's in great shape and ready to go on the road.
lsjhawk77 in Onstage1 asks:
Sheryl, so who do you listen to now and is there someone
special that you would like to sing with that you haven't
yet?
Sheryl Crow says:
I am listening to India.Arie, Outkast and Elton John's record.
I would like to do something with India or Nelly Furtado.
I think she's great.
harry_hood_0 in Onstage1 asks:
If you could follow one band for a summer tour, past or
present, who would it be?
Sheryl Crow says:
Oh gosh! Cheap Trick or Queen.
goth_chik_wales in Onstage1 asks:
What question do you get asked the most?
Sheryl Crow says:
Right now I get asked if I had plastic surgery, and the
answer to that is absolutely not.
Digital Dish Diva says:
Sheryl, thank you for joining us this afternoon to talk
with your fans about your new CD "C'mon C'mon."
Sheryl Crow says:
I'm so happy everybody tuned in. I wish I could answer everyone's
questions. I look forward to getting out this summer and
seeing you all.
