KENNETT OMAGGIA SHERYL CROW
La
cittadina di Kennett (Missouri) e' andata sempre fiera ed
orgogliosa di Sheryl Crow. Quest'ultima non si e' infatti
mai dimenticata delle proprie radici, e in questo senso
si e' prodigata ben piu' di una volta a favore di questa
piccola comunita' rurale in cui e' nata e cresciuta. Per
omaggiarla, la locale Camera di Consiglio ha approvato e
attuato un progetto di modifica delle quattro insegne che
danno il benvenuto ai visitatori, aggiungendo, alla classica
scritta "Welcome to Kennett", la dicitura "Home
Town of Sheryl Crow" (vedi foto sopra). Si tratta senz'altro
di un gesto davvero molto carino che non avra' mancato di
lusingare il suo cittadino piu' illustre. E come si dice
in questi casi... Home Sweet Home...
ROCK AND ROLL? QUANDO E' NATO?
Sul
Boston Globe di ieri e' apparso un interessante articolo
sulle radici del Rock 'n Roll. Anche Sheryl ha qualcosa
da dire in merito...

The
marketing arm of the rock 'n' roll business is trying to
rewrite history.
BMG
Records, which distributes the Elvis Presley catalog, recently
decreed July 5, 1954, as rock's birth date -- meaning we
recently marked the 50th anniversary of rock 'n' roll. What's
so special about that spot on the calendar? Elvis recorded
his first single, "That's All Right," on that
day in Memphis.
Much
of the media bought into the anniversary hype. Rolling Stone
released a special issue devoted to the musical milestone.
So did England's respected Q Magazine. Even TV Guide included
a CD of "That's All Right" in a recent issue.
But
something's not all right about this.
The
splash is convenient for BMG, which is using the anniversary
to push more Elvis product -- namely, a CD of Elvis during
his early Sun Records period ("Elvis at Sun"),
plus two Elvis DVDs and a compilation disc, "Memphis
Celebrates 50 Years of Rock 'n' Roll." The city capitalized
on the date by staging a recent concert by Memphis singers
Justin Timberlake and Isaac Hayes. Sun Studio broadcast
the recording session of "That's All Right," and
radio stations around the world played it simultaneously.
But
the marketing blitz, by BMG as well as other companies,
reopens a nagging debate: Just when did rock really begin?
It's an issue that has long been tinged with racism, specifically
the notion that it took a white man to make it rock 'n'
roll, whereas before it was only R&B and what was then
described as "race music."
"I
think Elvis was given a lot of credit for introducing rock
to the masses because he was white and gorgeous," singer
Sheryl Crow says. "Not to take anything away from him,
but I think you could easily trace the true beginning of
rock back to the late '40s and early '50s with artists like
Big Joe Turner, who did 'Shake, Rattle & Roll,' which
was undoubtedly a rock song, as well as Ike Turner with
'Rocket 88.' "
Crow
is not the only artist to note that not enough credit is
given to black music pioneers such as Roy Brown, Fats Domino,
Ike Turner, Little Richard, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner,
Bo Diddley and Arthur (Big Boy) Crudup, who wrote and recorded
"That's All Right" way back in 1946.
"A
lot of people say 'Rocket 88' " marks the birth of
rock 'n' roll, Aerosmith's Joe Perry says of the 1951 release.
"But it's hard to sit down and pronounce any day as
the given day."
Still,
the July 5, 1954, anniversary was pushed regardless of any
contrary beliefs.
"It's
when rock started from a commercial standpoint," says
Joe DiMuro, executive vice president of BMG's Strategic
Marketing Group. "The song 'That's All Right' brought
true fanaticism to the masses. You could argue that Bill
Haley & the Comets also popularized rock before Elvis,
but they never had the magnitude of Elvis. Elvis put rock
on a pedestal."
Some
music critics, such as Robert Hilburn of the Los Angeles
Times, agree with the significance of the "That's All
Right" date.
"You
go from that record to John Lennon to Bruce Springsteen
to U2 to Tom Petty to White Stripes," Hilburn says.
"You don't get there from 'Shake, Rattle & Roll'
... or 'Rocket 88.' "
Adds
rock historian Arthur Levy, a voting member of the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame: "Let's face it, rock 'n' roll
would never have emerged ... unless white hillbilly cats
had started playing it."
That's
a bold comment, and it slams the door on too much music
that preceded Elvis.
Terry
Stewart, CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, says, "Rock
doesn't rise up from some primordial mud with one record.
If it did, then why not with 'Good Rockin' Tonight,' by
Roy Brown [1947]; or 'Rock This Joint,' by Bill Haley [1952],
or 'Crazy Man Crazy,' by Haley [1953]?"
Even
pop-music historian and acclaimed Elvis biographer Peter
Guralnick admits, "Elvis was part of a revolution that
could have happened without him."
There
is no denying that Elvis had talent, but he also helped
launch, however unwittingly, the ugly side of a trend.
"Everybody
ripped off black acts back then," says guitarist Eddie
Van Halen.
That
said, there's every reason to believe that Elvis, were he
still around, might be skeptical of this 50th-anniversary
hype. He saw himself as "part of a continuum,"
Guralnick says, and always had a respect for the cultural
diversity that preceded him. Long after he made it big,
Elvis enlisted black artists such as the Sweet Inspirations
for his Las Vegas show.
Frankly,
it's encouraging to see BMG's marketing strategy being questioned.
It suggests that people still care about the music and aren't
going to accept being passive consumers.
One
might ask dozens of people to pinpoint rock's inception
and get different answers from each. The bottom line is
that it's not going to stop the marketing machine. But it's
not too late to remind audiences that rock was about artistic
and cultural expression long before it became a commodity.

SATURAZIONE MEDIATICA : SHERYL E LANCE FUTURI SPOSI?

da ieri sera che circola la voce di un probabile matrimonio
fra la nostra Sheryl e Lance Armstrong, sara' vero? Non
sara' vero? E che ne so! Comunque stiano le cose gia' alcune
riviste, siti e persino emittenti radio hanno dato la notizia,
peraltro non confermata da nessuna delle due parti. Il sito
web Gossipnews.it (mi vergogno della fonte, ma tant'e'...)
ad esempio ci dice :
"Innamorati
pazzi! Lance Armostrong e Sheryl Crow sono inseparabili.
E mentre lui festeggia la sesta vittoria al Tour de France,
lei pensa seriamente a regalare un bebè al campione
dei suoi sogni.
Il ciclista ha dedicato la sue pedalate mozzafiato alla
bella Sheryl e, sembra, che le abbia addirittura chiesto
di sposarlo. A
raccontarlo è lo staff dell’Hotel de Carillon
a Parigi, dove la coppia ha soggiornato. La portavoce della
Crow si trincera dietro un semplice ‘no comment’,
ma i rumors sui fiori d’arancio in vista sono sempre
più insistenti. Intanto

quanto pare la fonte primaria risulta il famigerato staff
di questo Hotel parigino, che francamente non so quanto
sia attendibile. Vabbe', se ci saranno ulteriori sviluppi,
non manchero' di aggiornarvi :D

MATT DAMON INTERPRETERA' LANCE ARMSTRONG IN UN FILM BIOGRAFICO
Altra
gustosa notizia proveniente da Hollywood. L'attore americano
Matt Damon - attualmente sulla cresta dell'onda grazie al
suo ultimo film, "The Bourne Supremacy, in vetta alle
classifiche USA - vestira' i panni del 6 volte vincitore
del Tour de France Lance Armstrong in un film biografico
previsto per il 2006. Damon in questi giorni sta negoziando
con il famoso produttore Frank
Marshall con cui discutera' i dettagli del progetto.
L'attore de "Salvate il Soldato Ryan" ha fatto
infine sapere che intendera' sottoporsi ad un massiccio
esercizio fisico unito ad una dieta per perdere peso e meglio
calarsi nel ruolo del campione texano. La domanda ovviamente
sorge spontanea, chi interpretera' l'eventuale ruolo di
Sheryl Crow ? Qualcuno sul Forum Ufficiale ha gia' fatto
qualche nome :

I TOCCHI DI CLASSE DI SHERYL CROW - LA SAGA DEI JOLLY ROGERS

Alcuni
miei visitatori hanno davvero un occhio lungo, come il sottoscritto
del resto. Adoro osservare e cogliere ogni piu' piccolo
particolare di cio' che mi circonda, che volete farci, sono
fatto cosi'. Negli ultimi tempi mi sono giunte in casella
alcune mail di visitatori incuriositi da uno dei pantaloni
indossati da Sheryl nel tour europeo di fine 2003. Nel dettaglio,
si riferivano ad una particolare patch (toppa), raffigurante
teschio e ossa e volevano sapere da dove provenisse. Cosi'
mi sono detto, perche' non spendere due parole? Dunque amici,
lo stemma in questione, che potete vedere nella bella foto
in alto, appartiene al Fighting 103, un reparto da caccia
dell'US Navy imbarcato nelle portaerei che negli ultimi
decenni e' stato equipaggiato con il famoso Grumman F14
Tomcat (attualmente in fase di radiazione), aereo reso celebre
dal film "Top Gun".
Il VF103 e' denominato "Jolly Rogers" e i suoi
aerei si distinguono per avere le derive dipinte di nero
e decorate con l'emblema del "Skull and Bones".
Le origini di questa celeberrima unita' vanno fatte risalire
al 1943, quando venne costituto come Fighting 17, allora
basato sul celebre caccia a pistoni Vought F4U Corsair.

Ad
ogni modo Sheryl non e' propriamente nuova a questi capi
d'abbigliamento dedicati a reparti militari. In passato
ad esempio l'abbiamo vista con una maglia dei sommergibilisti
della Marina (SSN classe Los Angeles) e vari giubotti assortiti,
come quello della missione Joint Endeavour, in Bosnia, nel
1996, indumento poi finito all'asta per l'orfanotrofio della
Delta's Childrens.

RECENSIONE POSTUMA...
Raramente
vado pazzo per le covers, ancora meno amo gli album pieni
di covers, dunque mi accingo a scrivere queste due parole
controvoglia, e lo faccio solo per avvertire gli eventuali
fans all'ascolto. Come avete intuito dall'artwork qui sopra,
sto per andare a parlare di un CD tributo a Sheryl Crow.
Francamente ignoro chi cazzo siano questi Studio 99, ma,
in base ad una veloce ricerca, sembra che si guadagnino
da vivere realizzando unicamente album tributo, e gia' qui
la cosa puzza come i cessi maschili di un autogrill ad agosto.
Ma non e' tanto questo il punto, il fatto e' che ogni volta
che mi sono imbattuto in album realizzati da questi bipedi
ho sempre avuto i conati di vomito. Ricordo a memoria quelli
degli U2 e dei Queen... DISGUSTING. Ritornando a noi, tre
mesi fa, durante un ordine da Nannucci, vidi questo "Sheryl
Crow : A Tribute Perfomed by Studio 99" a 2.99
Euri - beh dai, si puo' fare - dissi fra me e me, infilando
il titolo nel carrello virtuale. Bene, l'avessi mai fatto.
Tempo qualche giorno e mi arriva il pacchetto, lo apro e
per prima cosa infilo il ciddi' nel giradischi digitale
(come sono professionale eh?). Dopo di che casa mia sprofonda
in un silenzio tombale, nonostante il mio impianto sia tutt'altro
che sfiatato. Dopo meno di due minuti avevo gia' emesso
il verdetto finale. Detto fra noi, sara' che di tribute
album non ne ho ascoltati molti ma vi assicuro che non mi
era capitato di sentire delle covers cosi mal realizzate,
approssimative, dilettantesche. L'arrangiamento era appena
passabile (e sono buono...) ma la voce della tipa era penosa,
non si avvicinava nemmeno lontanamente a quella di Sheryl
e cosa peggiore cercava d'imitarne l'estensione vocale con
risultati che non sto nemmeno a descrivervi. Alle sagre
paesane e in quei concorsini estivi da tv locale si trova
gente molto piu' dotata. Manco a dirlo, non ce l'ho fatta
ad ascoltare l'album interamente, mi sono limitato a 30/40
secondi per brano, skippando di continuo traccia dopo traccia.
Il disco si potrebbe considerare come una sorta di best
of di cover di Sheryl. In tutto vi sono 16 brani, che vanno,
cronologicamente parlando, da All I Wanna Do a Soak Up The
Sun, quindi dal 1993 al 2002. Da segnalare l'inusuale mix
eseguito facendo ricorso al Dolby Surround. Morale della
favola : EVITATELO COME LA PESTE.

IO AMO QUESTA DONNA!
No,
non pigliatemi per maniaco (anche se effettivamente a volte
ci vado vicino), ma... io non riesco proprio a rimanere
impassibile e insensibile di fronte al buongusto di questa
lady del midwest. Mi sorprende sempre. Prendiamo l'ultimo
regalo fatto al suo Lance in occasione della 6a vittoria
del Tour de France. Ora, un'altra fidanzata, chesso' Sandra
Bullock, di cosa l'avrebbe omaggiato? Un impianto home theater
con tutti i film in DVD a cui ella ha partecipato ? Un paio
di sospensori firmati da Eddie Merckx? Una bici senza freni
marcata Speed? Puo' essere, ma a noi non ce ne puo' frega'
de meno... ma Sheryl? Dico Sheryl?? Beh, e' andata decisamente
oltre. Alcuni di voi sapranno della mia sfrenata passione
per le auto americane anni 50/70, sanno che ho adorato l'inseguimento
a bordo delle Mustang nel video di Steve Mcqueen, e che
vado pazzo per la sua Stingray. Per questa ragione, quando
ho sentito che Miss Crow aveva impacchettato per Lance nientemeno
che una Pontiac GTO convertibile del 1969 sono sobbalzato
dalla sedia... beh quasi. Cmq sia sono rimasto piacevolmente
colpito, non tanto per il valore dell'oggetto, ma per l'azzeccata
scelta. Grande Sheryl!

ascoltano del buon Southern Rock, chesso' Lynyrd Skynyrd,
