CROW ROCKS IN NEW "GOT MILK" ADS

SHERYL CROW is showing off her raunchy rocker side in new US 'Got milk?' ads. The singer/songwriter, who is engaged to cyclist LANCE ARMSTRONG, sports a 'milk moustache,' ripped jeans, cowboy boots and a revealing black bustier in the new print ads for the National Dairy Council campaign. Crow, who poses in a trashy motel room - holding her guitar case and a glass milk, in the ad jumped at the chance to become the latest `Got Milk?' celebrity because she uses dairy as part of her healthy diet.

She says, "I like being healthy and I like feeling fit. It makes for a more exhilarating day."

Someone asked me: "...and Lance? Drinks milk?"

My dear, sure that drinks milk! I have an incontrovertible proof:

[CONCERT REVIEW] CROW MIXES FEEL-GOOD ANTHEMS, SERIOUS FARE

Singer connects, shows a contemplative side
By DAVE TIANEN
dtianen@journalsentinel.com
Posted: Jan. 27, 2006

When Sheryl Crow played Summerfest a few years back, she seemed somehow smaller than life.

There was a sense that her apprenticeship as a backup singer for Michael Jackson and Don Henley hadn't prepared her to take the spotlight on her own.

But a decade plus as a major artist has wrought some changes. The woman who took the stage of a sold-out Riverside Theater on Friday night has matured into a poised, confident, relaxed performer. If she is not quite a force of nature in the same way Tina Turner is, she is nonetheless a polished pro who has learned how to connect with an audience on her own terms.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that those first few albums are chock full of feel-good, dance-friendly anthems that are ready made to seduce a theater crowd into a fun night. Most of them showed up in the set list Friday: "All I Wanna Do," "Soak Up the Sun," "A Change Would Do You Good," "If It Makes You Happy," "Everyday Is a Winding Road," and "My Favorite Mistake" among them.

But Crow also has a new album. While not exactly downbeat, "Wildflower" is a more contemplative, even serious record. She introduced "Where Has All the Love Gone" as her anti-war song, and the lyrics make it pretty clear she feels her nation has gone astray. "Letter to God" is what the title implies, a kind of prayer in song, but a prayer that acknowledges doubts and fears.

"Letter to God" is not exactly party fodder, and Crow obviously knows it. After the song, she turned to the crowd for reassurance, asking, "You don't mind a song about God, do you?"

Although she writes most of her own stuff, two of Friday's best moments came on cover material. Her version of "The First Cut Is the Deepest" holds up well against Rod Stewart's homey reading, and her take on Dylan's "Mississippi" has a nice down-home feel worthy of a girl from Kennett, Mo. For this tour, Crow is lugging along a full string section, but the strings proved to be a good investment, lending an Appalachian aura of rustic beauty.

Crow now has the confidence and poise to tell a joke on herself. It turns out that Dylan had sent Crow "Mississippi" before recording it himself on "Love and Theft." When Crow finally had the chance to meet the Bard of Hibbing, she was anxious to hear how he liked what she'd done.

She recounted their exchange like this:

"Bob, did you hear my version of the song?"

"Yeah."

"Well, did you like it?"

A bit of a pause, then. . . "How'd you like my version?"

CROW'S FEATS CONTINUE TO SELL OUT SHOWS

Tunes & Tix column by Tim Shellberg

BY TIM SHELLBERG
Times Correspondent

From Missouri music teacher to Jacko backup singer to Grammy regular to the future Mrs. Lance Armstrong, Sheryl Crow's story, at least up to now, is the right stuff for an A&E "Biography," if it hasn't been done already. A mainstream regular now for a dozen years, Crow is a rarity in the popular music world these days, especially one not caught up in the high-gloss MTV world, in that she has simply been able to stay in the forefront of the music-buying periscope this long, and well at that. As accessible as they come and always radio-friendly, Crow is as welcome with the Lilith likes as she is sharing the stage with the Stones.

But despite the multiplatinum albums, sold-out venues on all corners of the globe, and oodles of awards, Crow will never be hailed for her pure musical authenticity. Her '94 breakthrough hit, "All I Wanna Do," is a carbon of Stealer Wheel's '70s AM staple "Stuck in the Middle." She paid tribute to her Stones chums two years later with "If It Makes You Happy," and her 1998 set, "The Globe Sessions," reeks of influence by everyone from Aimee Mann (who's in town to play to a full house Wednesday at Chicago's Vic Theatre) with "My Favorite Mistake" and "Anything but Down" to a near-plagiarizing rendition of Concrete Blonde's "Joey" with "Members Only." With that in mind, Crow need not rush to record an all-covers album in the near future; she's been doing it quite well here and there for more than a decade now.

SHERYL CROW CONTINUES TO BLAZE HER OWN PATH

We'll talk to you later,
Jeff Jolley
Rational Alternative

The singer, who plays the Fox on Thursday, continues to evolve, keeping her audiences captivated

'Tell me why the road keeps turning, when everything you want is straight ahead." So emotes rock maven Sheryl Crow on the opening track to her latest album, "Wildflower." The line functions as an easy metaphor for the singer/songwriter's long, committed ascent into the realms of multi-platinum rock stardom.

And while fans may suspect "Wildflower," inspired by Crow's romance and pending marriage to Tour de France champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, 34, to be brimming with joy, it's actually a contemplative affair. As is her trademark, Sheryl Crow is doing it her way.

On Thursday, Crow will roll into Detroit's Fox Theatre in support of the new album. At 43, the Missouri native has come a long way from her days of cover bands and backing gigs (the most notable of which was a stint on Michael Jackson's "Bad" tour). But it is the singer's ability to transcend fashion that has kept her a viable contender in a supremely fickle industry.

"She's always growing and changing," says Jason Fine, an associate editor at Rolling Stone from the magazine's New York City offices. "You certainly can see her striving to do something new. With this record, she's trying to move in another direction and grow -- and that's what keeps her fans riveted. They're growing up with her."

In September, Crow told the Associated Press that most of the latest "songs are based on conversations Lance and I would have about religion and Terry Schiavo and about our government, and how we felt about the kind of world we felt we were leaving his (three) children." And while these weighty issues occupy much of "Wildflower's" essence, Crow sited the bloom of love as the catalyst. "I think it's one of the only things that has really been missing from my life," the singer says. "It was a very necessary experience for me."

Her 1993 breakthrough album, "Tuesday Night Music Club," inspired by a collective of Los Angeles industry peers who gathered weekly to write songs, established Crow as a major force in the mid-'90s, scoring multiple Grammys and big-ticket record sales. After the club's success, Crow found herself a welcome guest in rock's most elite camps. The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton (with whom the singer allegedly had a romantic involvement) and Stevie Nicks all embraced the star, whose music bore more than a passing resemblance to their own.

"I think she's been very clear about following her own role models like Neil Young and George Harrison," says Fine, "so, in that sense, she's following in the footsteps of the stars from another era that she idolizes rather than trying to make pop hits that connect with 18-year-olds."

Which is not to say that she's not in touch with contemporary audiences. Her 2001 duet with Kid Rock, "Picture," became one of the biggest hits of her career.

"She's one of our core artists," says Jesse Addy, afternoon DJ on Detroit radio station WDVD-FM (96.3). "She came onto the scene when pop music had become open to artists that could play instruments and sing songs about real experiences. She sort of defined her own rules after that."

Anna Gersh, co-founder of DWOT Productions, which produces an Women's History Month event every March in Ann Arbor, says it's Crow's lack of pretense that makes her a credible artist and, additionally, a good role model.

"She's a mature, smart woman and a competent player as well as a vocalist," says Gersh. "She continues to evolve musically and doesn't seem to be swayed by porno culture. I don't expect we'll be seeing Sheryl Crow doing a video where she's dancing around a pole."

For Crow, it's about the work.

"A lot of people get into (the industry) because they want to be seen, but, for me, I wanted to be so great. I wanted to matter," she has said. "I know that nothing I do is ever going to be perfect, but I still have the exciting feeling that my best work is ahead of me. And I feel that way about my life."

Wendy Case is a Metro Detroit freelance writer. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

CROW'S DOG DILEMMA

Rocker SHERYL CROW is considering leaving new pet Labrador behind when she tours this year (06), because she fears the pooch will devour her designer shoe collection. The singer worries she'll have to take to the stage barefooted if her new dog REX joins her on tour. It's a big dilemma for Crow - because her late Labrador always accompanied her when she toured. She says, "I used to bring my yellow Labrador with me, but he passed away... He went on tour and every tour bus.

"(But) Rex is prone to eat anything, so I don't know if he's going to make this tour. I have too many nice shoes."

[E-MAIL] DOMANDA TECNICA, RISPOSTA TECNICA

Buona ricerca! ;-)

ARMSTRONG IN TALKS ABOUT MOVIE ON HIS LIFE

America's seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has told a South African newspaper that he is in talks on a movie about his life.

Armstrong, 34, is due to travel to South Africa on Wednesday along with fiancee Sheryl Crow for a visit that will include a tour of Soweto, the township that was the centre of anti-apartheid resistance.

In an interview to the Sunday Times Armstrong said that Matt Damon was favoured to play him in the movie.

"Matt's somebody I've known for a few years and is willing to play the part," Armstrong said. "He can dig into it on the athletic side and the illness side, but he'll also look and ride and feel like a professional cyclist."

SILVER SPRING, Md., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Rock siren Sheryl Crow joins the star-studded lineup for Animal Planet's TRAIL MIX, a two-hour special premiering Sunday, January 29, 2006, from 8-10 PM (ET/PT). Shot in high definition, TRAIL MIX highlights the special bond between some of the music industry's hottest acts and their horses. Hosted by recording artist and Broadway sensation Linda Eder, the program will feature an eclectic mix of artists from rock stars to pop singers to opera virtuosos, all of whom share a love of horses.

Nine-time Grammy award winner singer/songwriter Crow will give audiences a peek into the special relationship she has with her four horses. On location in Austin, Texas, Crow reveals a rarely seen side as she shares her passion, explains how horses inspire her art and shares her most compelling stories about the horses she loves.

"It's like being a musical performer, in that you go out on stage, you play music and you hope that what you're gonna get back is reciprocal. And it's the same with a horse. You know, they want that relationship with you just like you want that relationship with them, that union, that bond," said Crow while filming the special.

Crow joins a kaleidoscope of today's hottest musicians: former Matchbox Twenty front man and solo artist Rob Thomas; two-time Grammy winner and crossover country music sensation LeAnn Rimes; solo recording artist and legendary lead guitarist of the rock super band Aerosmith, Joe Perry; Grammy- winning singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter; and world-renowned Irish tenor Ronan Tyan.
