Elvis Costello has been added as the special guest during the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert starring Sheryl Crow July 11 under the Gateway Arch. KSDK -- Another big act is joining the fanfare surrounding the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball announced today that Elvis Costello will join Sheryl Crow as her special guest at the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert July 11. The show will be under the Gateway Arch at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The concert is free to fans. "Having long cherished my Dad's catcher's mitt from his time with the Bidston Indians in the local, post-war, Merseyside amateur leagues, inspired by visiting USAAF baseball enthusiasts, I'm delighted to take part in this event," said Costello in a news release. "Having given up my chance to play sports for a life in music, I cannot think of anything better than sitting in with Sheryl and her band for a few surprise numbers and a rocking good time in St. Louis." The concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Prior to the concert, the Cardinals-Cubs game will be aired live at the concert location for fans to view, beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT. All visitors will be screened at security checkpoints before entering.

By Kyle Anderson 'I can't speak highly enough about what I got to witness every single night for nearly two years,' Crow says of her time on tour with the King of Pop. Thursday evening (June 25), on the MTV special "Michael Jackson: A Tribute," Sheryl Crow called in to share her memories of Jackson and her thoughts on his passing. Crow spent nearly two years on the road with Jackson as a backup singer during his world tour for Bad and also appeared in the video for "Dirty Diana." Like many of the stars who spoke to Kurt Loder about Jackson's death, she looked back on his career with a sense of awe. "I can't speak highly enough about what I got to witness every single night for nearly two years, which was the brilliance of someone who was truly innovative," Crow said. "Before 1984, no one had ever seen moves like that." Crow was candid about Jackson's demeanor on the tour, suggesting that he was already recoiling from the rest of the world. "When I started working with him, I think that was when he really started to isolate himself," she explained. "I think he started to take into his own hands what he was going to try to project as his legacy, so everybody in the band and in the crew was kind of held at arm's length." Despite his reservations, Jackson still got close to Crow. "I got to go out and sing with him twice every night on 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' and 'The Way You Make Me Feel.' So I had more interaction with him than most. One thing I remember him telling me was that he really felt like he was sent to the planet for the children. I thought that was really telling, because he considered himself to be eternally childlike." She also said that she believes Jackson's legacy is visible every day. "You can see how much of an impact he's had when you see Usher and Justin Timberlake. They're still using those moves, they're still sounding like him and using those riffs. You can see how deeply effective he was as an R&B artist." >> SC & MJ Photo Gallery (1987-89) <<
Country fans. Rock fans. And even baseball fans. Sheryl Crow just has a likeability factor that makes her (and her music) appeal to everyone. So it makes sense that she was the one chosen to headline a July 11 concert in St. Louis during all-star game weekend. And to add to the charm, it’s free. Major League Baseball is joining forces with President Obama to encourage everyone to volunteer in their hometowns this summer. And this concert is just one way they are getting the word out about this United We Serve initiative. According to the White House blog (yes, the government has bloggers, too), the First Lady says we all need to “make service a daily part of their lives … it’s not something that you do in your spare time.” So go hear some good music and do something for the good of your community. And in the meantime, if you like Crow so much you want to dress like her, check out her new Bootheel line of vests, jeans and T-shirts. Source: blog.cmt.com

Sheryl Crow will headline a free concert under the Gateway Arch as part of the festivities celebrating Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game at Busch Stadium next month. Pepsi will be the presenting sponsor, the SportsBusiness Journal reported this week. MLB plans to host a news conference Monday to announce Crow as a performer in the concert, which will benefit Stand Up To Cancer and be held at 8 p.m. July 11. Stand Up To Cancer raises funds to support cancer research. Bon Jovi performed at last year’s All-Star Game concert in New York’s Central Park, when the Yankees hosted the game. The July 14 game and its related events July 10 to 14 in St. Louis are expected to bring an estimated $60 million to the bi-state region and about 230,000 people, almost all of them out-of-town visitors, according to estimates by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association.
