[NEWS] SHERYL CROW, JAMES CAMERON AND BILL GATES AT THE TED CONFERENCE

CONFERENCE: The invitation-only program features world-class leaders.

By Karen Robes Meeks
Press-Telegram Staff Writer
Posted: 02/08/2010 07:55:29 PM PST

LONG BEACH - Director James Cameron, singer Sheryl Crow, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former CIA covert operations officer Valerie Plame Wilson are among the more than 40 speakers and musicians coming to Long Beach this week for the annual invitation-only TED Conference at the Long Beach Convention Center.

TED - which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - brings together 1,500 of the most creative and scientific minds to Long Beach, which is hosting the event for the second consecutive year, from Wednesday to Saturday. Organizers moved the event here last year after it outgrew its venue of 24 years, Monterey.

"Once again, it brings world-class luminaries, leaders and thinkers from a variety of walks of life and disciplines to Long Beach," said Steve

Goodling, president and CEO of the Long Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, adding that hotels are full.

Themed "What the World Needs Now," this year's conference features a diversity of speakers ranging from anti-

slavery activist Kevin Bales to spider silk scientist Cheryl Hayashi.

And what the world needs now is something of a rethink, said TED Curator Chris Anderson.

"Whether it's climate change, health care, or the sputtering global economy, you can't miss the sense of frustration and malaise," he said. "Public policy stumbles forward, ever more compromised and complicated, but there seems little to celebrate.

"At TED2010, we expect a different kind of conversation. We've lined up a spectacular group of speakers with the ideas to help us break out of this toxic tangle, ideas that are insightful, provocative, mold-

breaking and inspiring. In the long run they can make a significant difference to our shared future."

On Wednesday, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver will be presented with the 2010 TED Prize, a $100,000 award to be used by the recipient to make real his "one wish to change the world."

Oliver has been involved in various projects, including a campaign to improve nutrition at schools that prompted the UK government to invest $1 billion to overhaul lunches. He has also spoken on health-related issues, such as obesity and diabetes, and founded Fifteen Foundation, which helps disadvantaged 18- to 24-year-olds learn to work and lead in the restaurant industry.

Also speaking at TED is Long Beach native Chip Conley, founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, a boutique hotel company with lodgings in Northern and Southern California, including Hotel Maya, Long Beach's newest waterfront lodging.

Conley, a first-time TED speaker, will discuss "why it's important that business and political leaders focus more on the intangibles of life, like happiness, to manage their operations," he said.

Conley said he is especially excited to hear speeches by Gates and creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson.

"It's people who are coming together and spreading really interesting new ideas about how the world can work in many different ways, and I think it's fascinating that they've chosen Long Beach to be the place," Conley said, adding that TED puts Long Beach on the map.

Goodling would not discuss the length of TED's contract in Long Beach, but did say that TED "has committed for several years."

"We're absolutely thrilled to have that privilege, but like any relationship we know that we must continue to earn it," he said. "And all of us - the hotels and the city - have worked very hard to respond to the TED organizers and the needs of their members."

One example of something suggested by TED guests was installing more lighting along Ocean Boulevard to create a safer walk from the Convention Center to the Hilton, Goodling said.

"Not only will this benefit TED and all the attendees but it will benefit all of our groups and visitors and residents in the downtown area," he said.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the temporal and the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He frequently states that his life is guided by three major commitments: the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness, the fostering of inter-religious harmony, and the welfare of the Tibetan people, focusing on the survival of their identity, culture, and religion.

Whole Child International

Whole Child International is a global NGO working to elevate the level of childcare for vulnerable children worldwide. It believes that all children, as a matter of human rights, should have the opportunity to fulfill his or her developmental potential. Whole Child International strives to build culturally sensitive solutions that incorporate best practices into the care of institutionalized children. Over the past three years, Whole Child has staged interventions in eight childcare institutions with the support of government organizations in El Salvador and Nicaragua. [LIVE REVIEW] 2010 MUSICARES (USA TODAY)

By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — Friends and disciples led Neil Young on a journey through the past, singing his songs and his praises at the 20th annual MusiCares gala Friday night.

"He made the free world a better place to rock in," said actor/musician Jack Black, host of the benefit at the Los Angeles Convention Center. "Long may Neil run."

Named 2010's Person of the Year, Young, 64, was celebrated for his artistic and philanthropic contributions, especially his longtime commitment to Farm Aid and the Bridge School for children with severe speech and physical disabilities.

The Recording Academy charity event, which provides financial and medical and assistance to musicians in need, drew a record crowd of more than 2,200, including such brand names as Jeff Beck and Brian Wilson.

Black discouraged civilians from confronting celebrities with convoluted tales of adoration. "Keep it caveman," he said.

The stage served up a steady parade of stars, starting with John Mellencamp, joined by T Bone Burnett on guitar, performing a brawny version of Down By the River. Ozomatli's Mr. Soul, a brassy, bruising slice of psychedelic Latin rock, followed, and then the mood turned mellow with Jackson Browne's Don't Let It Bring You Down and a duet of Long May You Run by Stephen Stills and Sheryl Crow.

Stills returned for Crosby, Stills & Nash's Human Highway, and Crow reappeared for one of the evening's high points, a rendition of Helpless with Elton John, Leon Russell and Neko Case.

"As a philanthropist and humanitarian, you're one my heroes," said John, who spoke of Young's early support and generosity. "I'll never forget your kindness."

Ballads and midtempo tunes dominated the bill: Only Love Can Break Your Heart performed by Lady Antebellum, Tell Me Why by Norah Jones, Lotta Love by Jason Mraz and Shawn Colvin. The twangy harmonies of Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams graced Comes a Time.

Introducing the harrowing The Needle and the Damage Done, Dave Matthews said, "Death is a wicked way for life to remind us how precious it is."

Rising band Everest turned Revolution Blues into Dylanesque punk. Elvis Costello, reminiscing about hearing early Young tunes on Radio Luxembourg, played The Losing End (When You're On).

Wilco, providing another peak moment, delivered an impassioned Broken Arrow that built to a cacophonous climax. Ben Harper, on acoustic slide guitar with three backup singers, revived protest tune Ohio. And Keith Urban and John Fogerty joined forces on a rollicking Rockin' in the Free World.

Not every effort soared. James Taylor's Heart of Gold felt unrehearsed, Dierks Bentley's flavorless Cinnamon Girl had none of the original's charm. And the Red Hot Chili Peppers' off-key A Man Needs a Maid lumbered. As for Josh Groban's formal treatment of Harvest Moon: bad fit.

In a live auction, Elton John coughed up $12,000 for the chance to sing background vocals on Brian Wilson's next album. Afterward, Black began to improvise, first with his shoes, which fetched $500.

"It has arch supports," he said. "Those are not included. I'll give you the socks later."

Next he offered his tie. "Flowers, colors — 50 bucks?"

A fan paid $100. And finally:

"Who wants my pants?" he said, dropping his trousers to reveal red boxers. He warned the cameraman, "Don't go close up!"

Black hoisted a large sign that Young had created backstage for performers. It read: "Just do what you want to do. Don't listen to anyone else."

"This should get more than my shoes," Black said.

Sure enough. Young agreed to sign it, and a bidder paid $20,000.

The flustered honoree took the podium and thanked the night's many musicians.

"I forgot how many songs I've written," Young said. "It's been a great night. Wore me out."

He expressed discomfort in gazing back, that it's difficult to recognize the prolific young artist who wrote Broken Arrow. And he wonders what's left in his quiver.

"I listen to some of those songs — who was that guy?" he said. "Look at Tony Bennett. He rocks. I look at that man and say, 'I can do this.' I'm going to keep on going, and I hope you do, too."
